Beneligue No.6 - Amsterdam Polo day

The intended Beneligue No.6 went a bit different than expected. In stead we chose to just play polo!!!!!!!! Lot’s of throw’ins and in the afternoon Alex Figueira proposed to do a “single player shuffle” tournament, which was hard and lots of fun. You play with people from every level and you’ve never played with. I played the final with Alex Figueira from Amsterdam and Vincent Poujol from Brussels, and we won.

Beneligue round 2

EHVFXD played the 2th Beneligue tournament in Namurs (Belgium) last Sunday.
After a slow start the overall results were quite consistent, resulting in making it to the finals. After a draw and a loss in the brackets we met the Paris mix team consisting out of Yorgo, Greg and Hugo again. We lost 5-2.

Overalla good day of polo, lots of things learned. Playing on a big court (icehockey USA/Canada style) pushes you to change your game and you feel the fatigue.

Yesterday (Sunday October 16) the first Beneligue tournament was held in Antwerp.
It was a good day on a as always good court, EHVFXD lost their first game against Simon Says (Antwerp Diamonds) but the 10 matches after that they won, resulting in winning the first Beneligue tournament.
Antwerp Diamonds made a nice trophy that EHVFXD received.

Road to Hollywood

Last Sunday our road to Hollywood began with the television shooting of “Proefles”, a VPRO program hosted by Tim Haars, also known from Sixpack, De Pulpshow and New Kids.
There was a lot of shooting during the day and some EHVFXD players played a key role in the whole.
We will put the episode online when it airs!

This Sunday, VPRO’s Proefles (Dutch televison) will tryout Hardcourt Bike Polo. EHVFXD is attending in Amsterdam! We are curious if the presenter Tim Haars will stay on his bike…good luck!

Bike polo in Eindhoven has been a little quiet the last couple of months, due to some people leaving abroad.
In October, hopefully, these people are back again so Eindhoven Bike Polo can regain their strenght again, from this moment on we can heavily promote the sport and getting more people to play this fabulous sport.

Laindon Bicycle Polo Club

Bill Chidley from LHBPA posted a nice link on the LFGSS forum about a bicycle polo club formed in 1935, Laindon Bicycle Polo Club.

The club was formed circa 1935 by Sid Hayden, the manager of the AMA Building Supplies. As it was over 75 years ago I can only remember some of the names of players. Chris Collings (Capt), Joe Oliver (England Goalkeeper), George Wellington, Reg & Ray Ferrer, Laurie Hatherall, Alan Mitchell, Wilf Simpson and Howard Hutchins.

Cycle Polo was a winter sport and no competitive league games were ever played in Laindon as they were all played on Sundays at the league ground at Roydon Milhouse, although highlights were sometimes shown at the Radion Cinema, by courtesy of Pathe Gazette and British Movietone News.

However in the summer we practised on the Laindon Hotel meadow and gave some light hearted exhibitions on carnival days, using ramshackle cycles to avoid damage to our match customised Claude Butler frames, supplied via Geo. Fuller Cycles of The Broadway, Laindon.

The club was very successful and in 1937 competed in the national finals at the elite Hurlingham Polo Club but were narrowly beaten by a south London club, Norwood Paragon.
The club ceased to exist with the outbreak of war. Cycle Polo was a serious game and not a carnival sideshow as some believe. I understand that it is still played but not in this part of the country.

This is a little footage shot by Tom Struyf at the 2.vs.2 tournament in Antwerp organized by FiGa and Bike Polo Antwerp on the 13th of March this year.
Sacha Piel and Jamal Hartane (EHVFXD) won the tournament.
